Gong Qi was born in 1912 in Beijing. He was a member of the 6th Central Committee of Jiusan Society, a member of the 7th Poliburo Standing Committee, the deputy-minister of Central Propaganda Department, the vice-chairman of the Senate Committee, a member of the 5th National Committee of CPPCC, a member to Standing Committee of the 6th, 7th and 8th CPPCC National Committee. He also served in Chinese department of Beijing Normal University as a professor, and held the position of curator in Central Research Institute of Culture and History, honorary president of Chinese Calligraphers Association, chairman of National Commission for Cultural Relics Identification, counselor of State Department and a member to Standing Committee of the 9th National Committee of CPPCC .

In 1933, Zengxiang Fu introduced him to study with Yuan Chen on the subjects of academic schools and textual research. Afterwards, he was hired as a Chinese teacher in Furen Middle school.

In 1935, he worked as a teaching assistant in art department of Furen University.

Since 1938, he was a lecturer in Chinese department of Furen University while serving as a senior administrative officer of the Palace Museum who engaged in reviewing manuscripts and identifying cultural relics in the literature library.

In 1949, he was an associate professor in Chinese department of Furen University as well as an associate professor in museum department of Bejing University.

Since 1952, he played multiple roles, serving as an associate professor, a professor and supervisor of doctor-postgraduate in Beijing University, a member to Standing Committee of the National Committee of CPPCC, the chairman of National Commission for Cultural Relics Identification and the curator of CPC Central Research Institute of Culture and History.

In twilight years, he was appointed as a consultant of Jiusan Society, the honorary president of Chinese Calligraphers Association, the founding president of International Calligraphers and Painters Association, a consultant of Chinese Buddhists Association, the Palace Museum and National Museum and the president of Xileng Seal Society.

He died of illness in Beijing at 2:25am on 30th June, 2005.

Gong Qi is the author of a dozen books, including “Essays of Ancient Fonts”,“The Rhythmical Theories of Poem”“Essays of Gong Qi”,“Rhythmical Essays of Gong Qi”“Whispers of Gong Qi”“Words of Gong Qi”,“The Essays of Chinese Language Phenomena”“Book of Jueju”, “Book of Reading Notes”, “Studies on Eight-part Essay” and “Graphical Book of Painting and Calligraphy of Gong Qi”.

“The Collection of Gong Qi” published in Beijing Normal University Press is comprised of 20 volumes. The first ten consists poetry creations, lectures, oral history, letters and diaries, the rest are collections of paintings and calligraphy produced by Mr. Qi in varied forms, like albums , fans, hand scrolls, horizontal scrolls, word lessons and imitated calligraphy and so on. This work is not only a historical records treasured for future generations but also a great art of high value for appreciation and research.
